- Learning Outcomes
-
This seminar will be focussed on discussing selected topics from the book "Proofs from the BOOK" by Martin Aigner and Günter M. Ziegler (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proofs_from_THE_BOOK), and problem-solving related to these and other topics. A wide range of topics in pure maths will be touched, hence this seminar is intended for students who opted to study pure maths (and not statistics or theoretical physics) previously. (This concerns those who intend to take the seminar for credit [5 ECTS]; it is also possible to attend seminar to learn something new but not to receive credit for it.)
- Assessment Detail
-
The final mark will be made of marks covering four components: attending, presenting, reporting, problem solving.
Attending (10%) comes from attending weekly meetings of the seminar
Presenting (25%) comes from giving presentations in class on the topic(s) suggested by the seminar coordinator
Reporting (45%) comes from making a report on someone else's presentation (normally more detailed than in-class presentation; College regulations on plagiarism apply, so you should not just re-produce a book chapter)
Problem solving (20%) comes from weekly homework assignments. Rules here are as follows: there will be 10 homework assignments, for which at most 5 marks can be earned by each student. Full solutions for any single homework is 1 mark, group work is permitted but then the 1 mark is divided between the group (e.g. three students working together on a weekly problem set will receive 1/3 of a mark each).
