Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  • Verify the Lorentz covariance of the Dirac and Klein-Gordon equations;
  • Perform Lorentz transformations on spinors;
  • Apply the gauge principle both in the abelian and non-abelian case;
  • Apply the Goldstone theorem;
  • Work out the consequences of the Higgs mechanism;
  • Identify the basic interaction vertices between the fields in the Standard Model Lagrangian
Module Content
  • Scalar and spinor fields and their field equations;
  • Abelian and non-abelian gauge symmetry;
  • Goldstone theorem;
  • Higgs mechanism, mass generation;
  • The complete Standard Model Lagrangian
Module Prerequisite
MA3431 - Classical Field Theory I, MA3432 - Classical Field Theory II, MA3441 Quantum Mechanics I, MA3442 - Quantum Mechanics II
Assessment Detail
This module will be examined in a 2 hour examination in Trinity term.Continuous assessment will contribute 10% to the final grade for the module at the annual examination session.
