Senior Freshman Regulations (Mathematics)

The regulations that apply to the Two-subject Moderatorship Course in Mathematics are set out in the The University of Dublin Calendar (Two-Subject Moderatorship Courses - General Regulations).

• Students take modules to the value of 60 credits including both Mathematics and their other subject (30 in each term divided equally into Mathematics credits and credits for the other subject.)
• Students must register for Mathematics modules to the value of exactly 30 credits including all the compulsory modules (with the Administrative office of the School of Mathematics) and check that their modules are correctly recorded at the student portal by the deadline (date to be advised but likely to be in January).
• Papers are set on a majority of Mathematics modules at the annual examination (held in April/May). The mark for these modules may also incorporate credit for assessed work throughout the academic year as prescribed by the lecturers concerned. (For further information on assessment, consult the individual module descriptions.)
• Results for examinations are published according to the following grades: I = 70 to 100, II.1 = 60 to 69, II.2 = 50 to 59, III = 40 to 49, F.1 = 30 to 39, F.2 = 0 to 29.
• Each module is marked in the range from 0 to 100%.
• In order to pass their year in TSM, students must attain an average mark (credit weighted average) of at least 40% over the (30 credits of) mathematics modules and also obtain an average of 40% in their other subject. In addition students must either pass all modules or pass by compensation, which is possible in two ways:
  • pass modules totalling at least 25 credits in each subject (Mathematics and the other subject) and obtain at least 30% in all modules, OR
  • pass all modules in one subject and pass modules totalling at least 20 credits in the other subject with no module mark below 35%.
• Students who do not attend regularly, who are absent from tests and examinations without good cause may be returned to the Senior Lecturer's office as non-satisfactory for the relevant term. Non-satisfactory students may be refused permission to take their annual examination and may be required to repeat their year by the Senior Lecturer.
• A supplemental examination is held in August/September for those who have failed to pass the year at the annual examination. Freshman students will be required to sit a supplemental examination in all failed modules if they have not either passed or passed by compensation at the annual examination. Supplemental results are assessed by the same regulations as at the annual examinations, based on the modules passed at the annual examination session together with the results at the supplemental session.
• Students who do not pass at the annual or supplemental examinations are subject to regulations on repetition of year stated in The University of Dublin Calendar (Part II).
