Solid performances from DUO members
Last week saw two of DUOs members (and one who will join in the autumn!) running in the world orienteering championships (WOC) in Trondheim, Norway. The week started with the sprint competition and there were some solid Irish performances with Nicolas Siminon having the best, qualifying for the final coming 10th in his heat. DUO member Niamh O'Boylealso had a good run and narrowly missed out on the final coming 16th in her heat when 15 qualify! She finished only 6 seconds away from the final. Seamus O'Boyle (future DUO member) was 18th, also close to making the final.
In the long qualification Niamh built on her sprint run and managed to qualify for the final in this race. I watched the race live from the arena and it was surely the Irish who gave the biggest cheer when any news of Niamh came on the big screen. In the end Niamh had a great run and she recorded the best ever result for an Irish female at WOC!
In the relay event at the end of the week Niamh was once again running for the women's team and Rosiland Hussey from DUO led the team out on the first leg. She had a steady run and came to the finish in 28th place to hand over to the second leg Ciara Largey (who in Ireland runs for our worst enemies, Queens...). Ciara gained places and sent Niamh out in 24th which she held onto to give the Irish women a very creditable 24th place. The men also ran well and finished in 23rd.
You can watch Niamh's route in the Long final to see how well she did.
