Real-World Mathematical Modelling
School of Mathematics TCD, May 15th - 17th 2023
This three day event brings together mathematics, physics and theoretical physics students to work on problems supplied by non-academic sponsors from private sector companies, NGOs and beyond. The goal is to provide students with experience in applying their mathematical knowledge and intuition to real world problems and to connect and interact with partner groups and companies.
Participants will work in groups of three or four on problems proposed by the partner companies. On the afternoon of the last day, each group will present their solutions and prizes will be given for the best solutions. The event will be held in Tangent, Trinity's Ideas Workspace located in the Trinity Business School.

The first problem will be provided by SIG:

The second problem will be provided by the TPSA:
Based on the establishment of the Electoral Commission and its first boundary review, we are addressing the issue of how boundaries are redrawn within the Republic of Ireland. Your team will be provided with the current regulations used to determine how constituencies are drawn, as well as the key guiding principles that previous boundary commissions have used to make their decisions. The challenge will be to devise methods of implementing these constraints to create better boundaries algorithmically and to explore and expand mathematically on the meaning of some of the guiding principles used to determine what constitutes a valid constituency. It's worth noting that there is a lengthy history of mathematicians and physicists expressing an interest in the electoral process.
