ICM'98

Note of Welcome from the Federal Minister for Research and Technology

The history of science up to the present has shown us that discoveries and fundamental scientific findings, which are frequently accidental and seemingly useless at the outset, have thoroughly changed the outlook of mankind, our production methods and life styles. They were, are and will remain a potential which, when used responsibly, not only enriches the intellectual and cultural development of our peoples, but also makes a decisive contribution to the maintenance and further improvement of our material living conditions.

The view we have of the world today would be unimaginable without the knowledge resulting from mathematics - and the further development of advanced technologies would be inconceivable without mathematics. Therefore, the government of the Federal Republic of Germany together with the Senate of Berlin will contribute to ensure a success of the 1998 ICM-Congress in Berlin.
