Content
This module will cover the following topics, in order:
- First order scalar partial differential equations
- Distributions and fundamental solutions
- Calculus of variations and Noether's Theorem
Text
There is no official textbook for the course. I will occasionally provide notes here for things which are hard to find elsewhere.
Title | File |
---|---|
First Order Scalar Equations (Theory) | |
First Order Scalar Equations (Examples) | first_order_scalar_examples.pdf |
Distributions and Fundamental Solutions | Carlsson.pdf |
Calculus of Variations | calculus_of_variations.pdf |
The notes from the first part are still only half finished.
We'll only cover parts of Carlsson's notes in the second part of the module.
Exams
There will be single exam during the usual annual exam period, worth 90% of your course mark. We are not allowed to announce exam dates and locations on course web pages.
Assignments
Assignments will count for 10% of your course mark. They will be posted here. They will not be distributed in class. They are due at the start of lecture on the day indicated. Solutions will be posted here once the assignment has been corrected.

Tutorials
There are no tutorials scheduled for this course. I will sometimes take some time out from lecture to discuss a recent assignment or, less often, the current assignment, but usually I will just rely on you reading the posted solutions and paying attention to any hints given in the statement of the problems.
Past Module Webpages
This module is taught in alternate years. It was taught two years ago by Paschalis Karageorgis and two years before that by me. Previously there was no module with this code, but the content is largely unchanged from the old MA 2326, which was taught in the second semester. In 2015 and 2014 were taught by me. The content varies from year to year. Some of this year's material appeared previously in MA 3426 when that was still a thing. In particular, distributions and fundamental solutions appeared there in 2013.
