JF course for Scientists (first semester)

Discrete Mathematics part

Module MA1S11, lecturer: Richard M. Timoney

Introduction

In Michaelmas term 2012, there will be another lecturer (Prof. Stefan Sint) sharing the lecturing on module MA1S11 for the first semester. The second semester will continue in module MA1S12.

These web pages deal with one half of module MA1S11, the part where I will be the lecturer.

In general the mathematics modules aim to deal with topics in Mathematics of interest to future scientists. A lot of the module is designed to provide the background for more advanced topics that are directly relevant to highly mathematical scientific theories, but some of the topics will be used directly in your science subjects.

The present way of organsing the modules MA1S11/MA1S12 has been in place a couple of years now, and in 2012-13 there will only be relatively small changes compared to the past two years.

The material treated by Prof. Stefan Sint can be described as `Calculus' while the mathematical content of my lectures will mostly concentrate on linear algebra.

This part of the MA1S11 module has a feature that we try to make use of computers where they can help. This year I plan to try a new way of doing that with online resources.

See the Syllabus for more specific information and also the Guide to textbooks if you would like to read more on the topics covered.

There is information online about the second year course (which you may wish to take).
