Costa Blanca 2005

Featured Photo

This is one of my favourite climbing photos. Golden spanish limestone, sunshine and a great backdrop - and of course Al in a characteristic pose, just about to make a big move.

Cameras

I've used several cameras in the last few years. I started out with a small compact that I could take up climbs. As I grew more interested in photography I decided to get an SLR. In the last year digital camera prices lowered enormously I've move almost entirely from film to digital based photography.

CameraTypeComments
Yashica T5 Film Compact Good optics, a bit bulky for carrying on routes. Geraldine now has it.
Yashica FX2 Super 2000 Film SLR Fully manual SLR. I found that manual focus was awkward - especially being short sighted. I sold it to Domhnall to fund the Canon EOS 300.
Canon EOS 300 Film SLR This was the bottom of the range Canon SLR. I replaced the supplied EF 28-90mm lens with a better EF 28-135mm IS lens and a small EF 50mm.
Ricoh GR1s Compact This is about the smallest 35mm film camera you can buy. Perfect for carrying up routes!
Canon PowerShot G3 Digital Compact 4 Megapixel camera. Nice lens. The swivelling screen is fantastic, great for getting good climbing shots from unusual angles. When I bought it I thought an affordable digital SLR was still at least a year away. In fact, just six months later Canon brought out the EOS 300D. I sold the G3 to John to fund that!
Canon EOS Digital Rebel (300D) Digital SLR 6 Megapixel Sensor. Superb quality. The only drawback is that the sensor is smaller than 35mm film, effectively magnifying everything by a factor of 1.5. This is great for telephoto shots, but I really miss wide angle! The 300D is now my main camera, I use it primarily with the EF 28-135mm IS lens.
Sony DSC T1 Digital Compact Very small 5.0 megapixel compact - useful for carrying on routes, or other places where the EOS 300D is too big and cumbersome.
Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR 10 Megapixel Sensor. Faster and better high ISO performance than the 300D.
Canon PowerShot GR9 Digital Compact 12 Megapixel Sensor. Bought to replace the Sony DSC1 after the Sony was sat upon.
