High Performance Computing - Trinity College Dublin
In an effort to refamiliarise myself with academia and technical minded work, I returned to college 2 years after finishing my undergrad to study for a taught masters in High Performance Computing through the maths department in Trinity.
It was a lecture based course with exams at the end of the third term and then a thesis to be presented at the end of the summer term. The title of my thesis was "A stochastic estimation of the trace of the inverse of a large sparse matrix through use of the conjugate gradient algorithm and vector thinning".
The course was resonably challenging and I was definately exposed to a number of new techniques, practises and, on occasion, languages (especially PHP, which I have become a big fan of).
Due to the lighter course load I was able to get involved in other activities around campus that I had missed during my undergrad. Out of curiosity I attended some Philosophy lectures but quickly decided that it was not for me!
At the start of the year I was offered a job by the maths department to work as part of their systems administration team for the department network. One of my main responsibilities was co-ordinating the 061 (Pratical Computing) course for first year Matsh and Science students.
Further, I coached both the mens seconds and Ladies basketball teams for the season, while also writing for the Trintiy Record as a cinema reviewer and, primarily, a sports reporter. My work for the sports section got me nominated for the O2 Student Media awards as Student Sports Journalist of the Year.
It was great fun working on the paper with Gareth and Claire and it was probably the joint highlight of the academic year, along with coaching such an enjoyable and hard working ladies basketball team.
