WELCOME

I know that it's not very much to look at, but although I'm still in university, a postgraduate student doesn't have all that much free time.

So a little about me...
I graduated from the maths department in November 2004 and moved only as far as the statistics department. I'm currently being funded by a Walsh Fellowship - funded by Teagasc, where I am partially based in the Prepared Foods department of the National Food Centre.

During my undergrad life I joined the Juggling Society where I've gradually gained the confidence required to play with fire - who knows, I may eventually get around to posting up some photographs. Well, for my sins, the running of the society has fallen upon my shoulders (in fairness, compared to just about any other society it's very little work, as we have no guest speakers to worry about).

So the juggling escapades have lead to my current holiday plans for the next two years. Unlike most postgraduate students (or so it seems), there is a formal system in place for me taking holidays - I have to apply for leave and all that. I plan to make it to the European Juggling Convention 2005 which is being held in Ptuj, Solvenia. The major news is that the EJC in 2006 is going to be in Ireland. www.ejc2006.net for more details. If you can help or have any useful suggestions please follow the instructions on the site. Everything about the organisation of the EJC is voluntary - any help is welcome.

As for my work?
I'm currently using statistical modelling techniques to classify honey samples some of which have been adulterated in a laboratory setting. Honey is chosen for study as it is a relative complex substance, widely variable and prone to adulteration in a real life setting as it is expensive to produce.
Why should anyone care if honey has been adulterated with other safe substances?
Short answer - if anything has been added to it, it is no longer honey.
Long answer - as honey is so variable, it is quite a difficult problem to classify based on spectroscopic data, so that it should be possible to generalize any methods for use in other areas of food authenticity.
My supervisors
I currently have two supervisors. Gerry Downey is based in the National Food Centre. Brendan Murphy is based in the Statistics Department of Trinity College Dublin, but is currently spending 6 months in the Statistics Department of the University of Washington, Seattle.
Conference Presentations and Posters
When I have some more time I will set up a section for conference stuff. To date I have only attended two conference - The Young Statisticians Meeting 2005, where I presented a poster entitled Model-Based Discriminant Analysis of Near-Infrared Spectroscopic Data in Food Authenticity Studies
