In his Addendum to the Life of Sir William Rowan Hamilton, Hamilton's first biographer, Robert Perceval Graves, stated, on the authority of members of the Hutton family then living, that there was in fact no known relationship between Hamilton's mother (née Sarah Hutton) and the mathematician Dr. Charles Hutton.
