Problem-Solvers -- A forum for those interested in mathematical problem solving

About Problem-Solvers
English (USA)

The aim of the Problem-Solvers mailing list is to foster an interest in the art (or is it a science?) of mathematical problem solving.

Given 8 integers a,b,...,i such that the sum of any 3 successive integers is 16, and b=9, f=2, what are the remaining integers?

The current plan is to meet on Tuesdays at 6:30pm upstairs in Messrs Maguire's pub.
(This is on the quays; go down Westmoreland Street to the river, turn right, and it is a few doors down.)

The instigator of this project is Joshua Tobin . year Any thoughts on its implementation should probably be sent to him.

The idea arose from the visit of a team from the Maths Dept TCD (also organised by Josh) to the International Maths Competition (IMC) in Bulgaria.
The team (consisting of 4 maths undergraduates and 1 computer scientist) did reasonably well, as did a team from TCD in 2006 in the Ukraine.

Essentially, the IMC is a continuation of the Maths Olympiad for undergrads. It attracts teams from leading universities around the world; this time about 250 teams took part.

This year the winners, as usual, all came from Eastern Europe, where the competition is taken very seriously.
One of the 3 equal winners was a 17-year old from Poland, who was discovered when he was 11, since when he has had a personal tutor in mathematical problem solving. He told us that he had spent at least 2 hours every day for the past 7 years on problem-solving.
As the organiser of the IMC said, to enter the competition without training is like putting a team of amateurs in the field to play Chelsea.

So part of the motivation for the Problem-Solvers group is to go a little way to answer that need. But it is also hoped to create a forum for those who liketo torture themselves with difficult problems ...
