The Horrorist 1 (of 2)

Story by Jamie Delano
Art by David Lloyd

Vertigo, $5.95

Short Review: Interesting. Impressive.

Given his past record, you may not believe this, but Jamie Delanos' tale of the personified White Man's Guilt is pleasantly subtle. After the bombast of Animal Man and the recent eco-wanderings of Batman:Manbat (although the intermediate Ghostdancing was pleasantly light), Delano has chosen to show us, rather than tell us, how the West's sins descend on them in the shape of this woman at once powerful and crippled with pain. This version of John Constantine is interesting as well. Not the semi-definitive chancer from Delano's run on Hellblazer who defeated his troubles up until the point where he recognised himself in them, this John is frozen inside, unable to care or feel anything other than interest, until he spots the Horrorist, and is captivated. A fascinating and horrifying story follows, which is greatly helped by David Lloyd's art.
