The Books of Magic 19

Story by John Ney Rieber
Art by Peter Gross

Vertigo, $2.50

Short Review: 3,5,6... It's the neverending story!

An unexpected extra length to a series usually means one of two things: The writer has literally lost the plot (c.f. the Unkindly Ones storyline of Sandman), or the writer has suddenly found more plot than he can fit in the specified size (c.f. Church and State from Cerebus, or Everville from Clive Barker). This is generally unrelated to sequelitis, which occurs when a writer attempts plot recycling, but this remains the aim throughout (c.f. The Malloreon by David Eddings, the Xanth series by Piers Anthony, and the upcoming Vamps: Hollywood and Vein series). Fortunately, John Ney Rieber has been struck by the second of these maladies, and this issue is free of the "clean everything up in one issue" nonsense that it could easily be. A simple and heartwarming tale of love in hell. I defy anyone to read this without smiling.
