Hellblazer 91

Story by Paul Jenkins
Art by Sean Phillips

Vertigo, $2.25

Short Review: Good stuff, reminiscent of old Delano.

A battle between Roundheads and Cavaliers in 1642, a battle between police and punks today, and a kid on a bicycle, stuck half way between. A standard Constantine story, much used by Delano, and on occasion Ennis, but given more depth by the effortless characterisation that Paul Jenkins is bringing to the character. As Constantine gets older, he gets closer to his past, nearer to punk ethos. It ends with him hanging around with a group of new-age hippies. The last time he did this, it was the start of an incredible journey, right through the heart of Delano's vision of John. Whether Paul has a similar epic scale in mind here is hard to tell from this end, but he has sufficient depth of characterisation to carry it off. The art by Sean Phillips is as good as usual, and shares a quality with the writing: They both have real people in them.
