Goddess 1 (of 8)

Story by GarthEnnis
Art by Phil Winslade

My first thoughts, on seeing the page of this included in Absolute Vertigo, were respectively "Wow, Phil Winlslade can draw the best exploding heads I've ever seen." and "This is not necessarily a good thing." Fortunately, Garth Ennis doesn't use this as a method of gaining our attention by cheap thrills. There's gore all over the place. Garth seems to have happily abandoned any and all pretense at reserve, and gone screaming over the top in all directions. Man fed to shark, Tiger chomping on policeman, Scotland moved 100 miles north; it's all in a days work for Garth.

So, parallel to the first few issues of Preacher, he gathers his merry band: a mechanic, a homicidal Enviromentalist, a pathetic loser, and some mysterious girl with untold psychic powers(tm). And an incredibly unpleasant CIA agent (source of a mindless running gag), and you have something that looks just like Preacher, only more. The art is beautiful, as I've mentioned, with the exception that one of the main male characters looks more feminine than the plot seems to indicate. Whatever. Get this book, but leave your brain behind at the door.
