Short Review: Head-spinning dark fantasy
Not for the faint of heart, this exploration of beauty, plastic surgery and art takes more than a few turns before the final curtain call, which is as disturbing a final plot twist as I've ever seen, partially due to its obviousness, on a second reading. Young, handsome plastic surgeon David Scholem is contacted by a reclusive artist, Andrew Sphinx, to bring himself and his wife to Sphinx's island retreat, and perform an unspecified operation on him. He accepts, and the fun begins. To say any more would ruin some of the effects this books uses, but suffice to say that Peter Milligan still hasn't produced a main character without a major hangup of one sort or another. Duncan Fegredo's art, last seen with Milligan in Enigma, is well-suited to this tale of the mind and body.
