Johnny Dynamite 2 (of 4)

Story by MaxAllan Collins
Art by Terry Beatty

In this issue, after the introductions of the first, we see Freddie Faust, dying in the desert, meet the devil and (duh) sell his soul for unlimited life, and a little red book full of contacts, which can turn his life around. The catch is, his newfound immortality can only be brought to an end by one man: Johnny Dynamite, the one-eyed Private Dick who shot him in the first place. So Freddie (rechristened Felix Sartana) sets about carving a new life for himself with the help of a little Voodoo

So far, this is shaping up to be a straightforward morality tale, particularly since the story is narrated by a older, white-haired Dynamite. As far as mixing the mob with Voodoo, the story suffers in comparison to Mobfire, but it's the art that really makes it live. The story is depicted in shades of black, white and red, and this really suits Terry Beatty's art style. The art really is impressive, reminding me of Dave Gibbons in parts. All in all, a worthwhile read, if a little pricey.
