The Portable Lowlife

Story and Art by EdBrubaker

A collection of stories from the early life of Ed Brubaker and his buddies, this is inevitably going to draw comparison to Chester Brown's Yummy Fur, not least because Ed's younger self, in long hair and glasses, bears a certain resemblance to lil' Chester. Unfortunately, it doesn't come out of the comparison at all well; Whereas Chester's work has palpable depth of emotion and feeling, the people wandering around Ed's world are, well, lowlifes. They drink, they steal, they do drugs, not due to any need or purpose, but because it's something to do. If you like Autobio stuff, or grew up in a midwestern town in the last decade, you might find this touches a chord. Otherwise, leave it.
