Once upon a time, there was a weekly comic magazine called 2000AD. Still
is, in fact. With its flagship strip Judge Dredd,
and its uncompromising attitude to what comic content boundaries should
(or rather, shouldn't) be, it won a place in the hearts of a million
teenagers and older teenagers. It has been the springboard for nearly
all British writers (including, apart from those listed above,
Alan Davis,
Grant Morrison,
Mark Millar
and briefly
Neil Gaiman) and
artists (again, including those listed above,
Bryan Talbot and
John Higgins) of the last
two decades. And here is collected some of the approximately 1000
stories already written for it, and a well-judged lot they are. From the
nihilism of Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper and A.B.C. Warriors, to the
cyberpunk of Tyranny Rex, the xenophobic universe of Nemesis the
Warlock, and the sci-fi headfuck of The Visible Man and Alan Moore's
Future Shocks, this is an entertaining and addictive collection of the
reason why those on this side of the Atlantic are taking over the other
side. Feel the seeds of Vertigo, baby.
