Batman/Punisher:Lake Of Fire

Story by Dennis O'Neil
Art by Barry Kitson & James Pascoe

DC/Marvel, $4.95 US, IR£4.50

If you were to hear of a story involving the current grim & Gritty non-Batman and the incredibly over-used Punisher, you might imagine a cliche-ridden punch-em-up. Unfortunately, Dennis O'Neil didn't bother to think any further than this either, and thus filled the book with mindless fight scenes (at one point, the Punisher grabs a gas grenade from AzBat's belt pouch, pulls the pin, and moves away before AzBat can react. I. Don't. Think. So.) and expository dialogue (Hey, Jigsaw, why don't we explain the plan out loud in an unguarded office again? We managed to tell the audience the first time, but AzBat only just got here, so he doesn't know! And announce it again, since the Punisher didn't catch it the first time!) The art's not up to much either. It's very glossy and has lots of fire and bulging muscles, but someone must have given Jigsaw the power to completely modify the positioning of his scars from frame to frame (Maybe he should change his name to Crossword.). In short, not worth much.

"Him slugging me, that's the worst part" (Well, yes, particularly since he just hit you backhand with those spikes, and you shouldn't have a face left.)
