Roger Corman's Cosmic Comics, $2.50
Short Review: Great Fun.
There's a genre of film that America excels at. Needless to say, it as nothing to do with what comes out of Hollywood: Action (John Woo), Historical Drama (Merchant-Ivory), or Comedy (Anywhere else at all) are all done better elsewhere. No, the stuff we're talking about here is low-budget schlock. Enthusiastic acting, innovative scripts, and a general contempt for posturing is what we're talking about, and from Buckaroo Banzai through to the Evil Dead series, it rocks. Some of the results escape to full popular status, such as Wayne's World and Clerks, but this can't be helped.
Rock'n'Roll High School was apparently one of those films, and now it's a comic, featuring the Melvins (some indie band of much repute), written by Bob Fingerman (ex of White Like She), and drawn by Shane Oakley and Jason Lutes (Jar Of Fools). The plot is typical, in so far as anything is ever typical in these things. These two underage dudes strike a deal with the Melvins, that they'll impress the Melvin with their band tomorrow, in exchange for some of the porno that the Melvins are distributing to the old and needy, for charity. Problem being: The two dudes can't play, and have nothing to play with, except themselves. Problem being: They have a Psych exam tomorrow, which they know nothing about. The solutions to these problems, along with the genuinely wacky and exaggerated people mixed in with the plot, make this fun all the way. Go Get It.
