Mortal Kombat 1

Story by Charles Marshall
Art by Patrick Rolo & Bobby Rae

This is a very very silly comic. Starting with a close-up of the snarling face of the 8'2" four-armed ogre prince Goro, it sets up the stage for all the stars of the Arcade game to arrive at a mysterious island location, for a martial arts contest. There's expository dialogue and in-fight posing all over the place, although the high-point is undoubtedly the editorial brain-storm that resulted in the phrase "he is our greatest warrior" being applied by and about the same people, seperated by the turn of a page. There's Good Guys, and Bad Guys, and the Good Guys win the fights, and the issue ends with no fatalities, a result that may become a tradition over the remainder of the series, I suspect. The art is clean and immediate, with all the main characters identifiable. With a storyline as unchallenging as this, that may be all that is asked of the artist.
