Well, the first non-surprise is: This a Simon Bisley book, with the
story as second best. The good guys get together in time for the bad
guys to arrive, they fight, and then the whole mess is interrupted by
the fore-shadowed appearance of God. One quick surprise ending later
it's over, leaving the reader to look at the pretty pictures. And they
are pretty, in the most part. The most striking impression is how
hairless everything is; The world abounds with things for the sun to
gleam off, and the presence of a massive sword and spear fight doesn't
change things much. It's also a very dark book. The planet is overcast
for the majority of the book, leaving the identity of the aforementioned
gleaming light a mystery. If you can ignore stuff like that, it's a
visual treat, same as almost anything Bisley does.
