Short Review: Comics for the grownups. Impressive, if moody
This anthology doesn't mention whether the stories in it are created for it, a la Dark Horse Presents, or collected from books published by Drawn and Quarterly, like parts of Caliber Press's Negative Burn. It's strange for most of them seem to allow sequels/prequels, and I certainly wouldn't mind seeing them.
Story and Art by David Mazzucchelli
An sort-of auto-bio story about living in Paris. It's more a collection of highlights, which is probably the best way to do auto-bio. Interesting, and loove that Mazzucchelli art!
Poignant 1-page tale of one old woman's day.
Story by Fromental
An adaptation of the story by Marel Cox, this is a dark little tale of lives gone to desperation.
Story and Art by Maurice Vellekoop
Two engaging character portraits, told in parallel over two pages.
Story and Art by Jacques Tardi
A disturbing tale of one man lost in the trenches in World War One. Mortality everywhere, this is strong stuff.
