A.K.A. Goldfish: Joker

Story and Art by Brian Michael Bendis

Caliber, $3.50

Short Review: Slick.

The strange thing about dialogue is, some of it rings true, and some of it just doesn't. The prevailing trend in an imprint that needn't even be named is towards standard Britishisms, and there's enough American TV over here to make sense of most of what, say, Fantagraphics put out, but the habit of the characters in here towards using "yah" where all sane people say "yeah" is really getting on my nerves.

Apart from that, a good issue. It really wants to be a movie, and the chase scene and tense confrontations would probably work better there, but it still packs quite a punch, and the writers avowed intention to make this a series of interlinked novellas works, if only just. You can tell what happened before by careful reading, and since this is the fourth book of five, what happens afterwards isn't exactly a mystery. The art is nice black and white, although the constantly varying lighting conditions in the first scene can make distinguishing characters difficult. All in all, worth your money if you like your stories hard-boiled.
