1 Eye Open, 1 Eye Closed 2
Various
The editorial in this collection sings the praises of the mini comic,
although looking at the contents, this anthology has its fair share of
both the highs and lows of the format
- Jarhead, by Jeff Nicholson.
- A brilliantly warped and funny solution to one of the
problems besetting the present-day artist, fitting sufficient
drinking into a working day. The tale of his solution, the
pickling of his head, makes for engrossing and disturbing
reading
- Paradise Mislaid, by Edward Bolman
- An entertaining tale of Satan's attempt to get a decent
Breakfast at God's Diner. Notable in this tale is the variety of
artwork used. Satan in particular is portrayed both as a
cartoon and an anatomically correct (in all senses) human with
horns and a tail. The second form shows Bolman's talent for
facial expressions, which is missing in the cartoon like
depictions which are randomly mixed in. Still, It's his story to
tell, and he does so admirably.
- Physics for the confused, by Brad W Foster.
- Not a particularly funny story, even counting the small
self-explaining filler at the bottom of the page. Fortunately,
it's only 1 page.
- 3, By Dave Cooper
- Dave Cooper's Work depicts a world of imperfections, an
organic universe where nothing is straight, and there are no
hard surfaces. This 5-page work, exploring the familiar idea of
fractal universes (maaaan) with as new twist, is both brilliant
and beautiful.
- Nice Smelling Flowers, by Blair Wilson.
- This is such a blatant piece of new-age tree-huggery that I
have to suspect severe sarcasm. It's probably a damning
indictment of today's society that I find it difficult to make
the call. It's certainly an indictment of Mr. Wilson's
storytelling ability that I don't care.
- The Sorrow Tree, By R. Lewis
- An interesting 2-page retelling of a short story by S.B.Kobbs
- Bat-Fax, By Pam Bliss
- A bizarre funny 1-pager
- Retirement Plan, by Matt Madden.
- Here is the worst of the lot, a 21-page, one-note story
about encroaching technology in these modern times. Unfunny,
unsympathetic. Go watch Brazil instead, or any old Twilight Zone
episode. Blech.
